Should the channel one chooses for oneself be as far as possible from the channels others are using? Also an increase in RF interference from microwave ovens and cordless phones, which increases the noise level, also decreases SNR. Note that SNR, as measured from your iMac, decreases as the range to the base station increases because of applicable free space loss. For example, a signal level of -53dBm measured near an access point and typical noise level of -90dBm yields a SNR of 37dB, a healthy value for wireless LANs. Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) is the signal level (in dBm) minus the noise level (in dBm). What is the strength of the signal determining? And noise? Note that it discusses 802.11b, but these use the same channels as 802.11g. Graphic on this website to get a "visual" about channel overlap. In the example I gave you above, would channel 9 (the actual channel I'm using) be considered an "overlapping" channel? It shouldn't matter which base station you change first. Yes, you would need to use the AirPort Utility to change channels. If I were to change the channel I'm currently on, I presume that I would use Airport Utility? Would it matter which wireless device I changed the channel on first, i.e., the AX or the AEBS? However, your "perceived" Internet speed will be affected as it will appear that your Internet access is slower. It will definitely affect the data transfer rates between computers on the same wireless network, but it will NOT impact the speed of the Internet at your Internet router. ![]() ![]() The lower the SNR, the worse the wireless performance. Can a low SNR affect the speed of data transfers between computers, or from internet to computer? ![]()
